Poker has many types of poker players on the loose. They're out there at the table trying to hunt for each other's chips. Among the fiercest of them are the loose-aggressive types of poker players. Why are they so-called and how do we deal with them?
Loose-aggressive types of poker players are loose as far as hand play is concerned but aggressive as far as betting is concerned. With this combination, they sometimes become dangerous losers at the table. Nothing fazes them, not even holding a weak hand against solid ones. They just want to bet and do it with alarming style. Many players mistake them for holding premium hands or possessing exceptional play skills. These types of poker players can be further classified in no-limit Texas holdem into the Maniac and Strong Loose-Aggressive players.
Maniacs have the betting audacity but not the wit and skill to threaten us with. They lose a lot of money trying to buy pots and usually run our of investment after a game or two. An outstanding trait of these types of poker players is the lack of discipline. They love the thrill and action of an aggressive table, start the lively betting themselves, and often are the first to fall victim to such uncontrolled frenzy. Not many are lured to this persuasion but these types of poker players do appear now and then at tables.
Strong or good loose-aggressive players are the types of poker players to reckon with. They tend to win big pots due to their intimidating and aggressive stance, though they also lose big money. They are sharp readers of their opponents and great with well-timed wagers they make when opponents are at their most vulnerable play.
But in shorthand Texas holdem games, we can beat them also with a well-timed bet when they hold second best hands. These types of poker players are known to play many hands resulting to second best hands. With this situation we can easily control them with our strong hand. Another way of dealing with these types of poker players is to play at a table limit where the maximum bet is very affordable. This way we minimize their ability intimidate with their big bets. Or, play at a table where players have small stacks.
Loose-aggressive types of poker players should be welcome at out table. We need only to be sure that we have the right poker arsenal to counter their betting attacks: poker wit, skill, and enough stack.
